Jumbo

Alpine Larch (Larix lyallii) has a limited range in North America, from southern Idaho, northeast up the Rockies, with smatterings westward to the Cascades. But the stronghold is in the Purcells. This latter range is where Jumbo Pass lies, the alpine gateway between the East and West Kootenay regions. It’s only a few hours by vehicle and foot from Nelson. Casey, Amy and I found ourselves there recently, spending a night at the cozy Jumbo Cabin and hitting the fall colours of the larch just right.
